CONSENT TO PARTICIPATE IN RESEARCH

You are asked to participate in a research study conducted by Cindy Rehberg, a student from the University of South Africa (UNISA).   I will be carrying out a research study entitled, “THE EFFECT OF FAMILY ELDERCARE RESPONSIBILITIES ON LABOUR MARKET INVOLVEMENT IN SOUTH AFRICA AND CANADA:  A COMPARATIVE STUDY”.  The study is undertaken towards the fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Literature and Philosophy.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

This study will try to compare the influence of the labour market on family eldercare, specifically the involvement of women in the work force, in South Africa (developing country) and Canada (developed country). 

                PROCEDURES

We will be asking a series of questions dealing with issues surrounding eldercare, work life and family life.  Generally, it will take about an hour to answer these questions.  There will be no other need for follow up sessions.  If you would like to read about the research findings it will be available at:

CONFIDENTIALITY

Every effort will be made to ensure confidentiality of any identifying information that is obtained in connection with this study.  Data for the study will be collected through individual interviews that may last approximately one hour.  The interview will be conducted in a place and time most convenient to you.   The researcher will handle all information collected with utmost confidentiality and your participation will remain anonymous and no names will appear on any materials.

                PARTICIPATION AND WITHDRAWAL

You can choose whether to be in this study or not.  If you volunteer to be in this study, you may withdraw at any time without consequences of any kind.  You may exercise the option of removing your data from the study.  You may also refuse to answer any questions you don’t want to answer and still remain in the study.  The investigator may withdraw you from this research if circumstances arise that warrant doing so.  

                RIGHTS OF RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS

You may withdraw your consent at any time and discontinue participation without penalty.  You are not waiving any legal claims, rights or remedies because of your participation in this research study.  This study has been reviewed and received ethics clearance through the University of South Africa Research Ethics Board.  

Your consent to participate in this study will be highly appreciated as the results of this study will assist in understanding the financial issues facing elder caregivers in South Africa and Canada.  It is our hope that we can formulate specific recommendations towards improving
